Libraries in Clackamas County (LINCC) patrons, as of May 1, now have access to materials from libraries all over the state of Oregon thanks to the Oregon Library Passport Program (OLPP).

This program allows LINCC patrons to obtain a library card from other participating Oregon libraries (Click Here for list of participating libraries). That means that if you are traveling and visiting a city whose library participates in the OLPP you can check out materials from that library. If you have a valid LINCC library card you can apply for that library’s card by following their standard rules for obtaining one.

Since LINCC libraries are participating, that means that people with library cards from participating systems can obtain a LINCC library card if they are visiting Clackamas County.

To obtain an out-of-area library card you will need to present your LINCC library card and photo ID.

The Passport library card is free and valid for one year.

Loan limts: Out of LINCC area libraries will set their own rules on how many items can be checked out. This may be different from LINCC’s Passport limits.

Patrons from out of the LINCC service area that want to obtain cards from Clackamas County can borrow up to five items and place up to five holds. Overdue fines on three items or fines in excess of $25 result in a blocked card.

For more information, call the library at 503.630.8273 or visit the Oregon Library Passport Program Web site.

Oregon Humanities’ The Conversation Project is coming to Estacada Library! For three Tuesdays in May the Flora Room will open up for thoughtful conversations on critical social issues with leading Oregon scholars and thinkers. Visit the Oregon Humanities Web site for information on how Oregon Humanities is bringing these discussion programs to other cities around our state. Sponsored by Oregon Humanities and co-hosted by the Estacada Area Arts Commission and the Estacada Library.

Below are the topics to be discussed in Estacada:

May 7, @ 7 p.m. A City’s Center: Rethinking Downtown with Nan Laurence

Historically, a city’s downtown core has been the community’s cultural and economic center. Cities are trying to revitalize their downtowns, but the qualities essential to this revitalization remain elusive.

May 14, @ 7 p.m. Lessons from Lincoln: is Political Bipartisanship Possible? with Richard Etulain

Does Abraham Lincoln’s adept use of bipartisanship during the Civil War offer guidance in dealing with the polarizing controversies of the 21st century?

May 21, @ 7 p.m. Beyond Bars: Re-envisioning the Prison System with Walidah Imarisha

What role do prisons serve in our country? In some cases, do they actually cause rather than reduce crime?

These programs are free and open to the public.

Gone to the Dogs

by Librarian Annie Sprague

“A dog doesn’t care if you’re rich or poor, clever or dull, smart or dumb. Give him your heart and he’ll give you his.” From the book Marley and Me by John Grogan

Last week I had the great pleasure to visit Eagle Creek Elementary school with my new friends: one two legged and one four legged! Cruse, a beautiful silver Standard Poodle, and his Human, Brenda Thrasher, came to meet the children in Ms. Maxwell, Ms. Baker, and Ms. Bennett’s classes. Cruse is a sensitive, sweet and intelligent dog (poodles rank #2 in all dog breeds for intelligence) and he is also a licensed, insured and trained therapy dog who adores children. We came to school to tell the students about the Estacada Library’s Read to the Dogs program, where kids sign up to read to Cruse in 15-minute sessions.

It was so much fun to watch Cruse interact with the children. He is a wonderfully mellow dog. He let each child say “hi” and pet him, and he loved the attention and affection he got from the kids. It was fun for me to answer questions about reading to Cruse. Parents, one of the benefits of reading to dogs is that they are calm, non-judgemental listeners that can build a child’s confidence with reading. With confidence comes enthusiasm for reading and improved reading skills. Kids love dogs and these kids were so excited about the idea of spending 15 minutes with Cruse and having his undivided attention!

To sign up your child to read to Cruse call 503.630.8273. Cruse and Brenda are at the library on the first Sunday of the month from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the following dates: April 7, May 4, June 1.

Cruise and Annie at Eagle Creek Elementary School

In the Estacada area volunteerism is everywhere. From our arts organizations (Estacada Area Arts Commission, etc…) and service agencies (Food Bank, Community Center) to our City Council and Mayor, volunteers make more possible. Even at the library, we have a volunteer library board, and a citizens committee that assisted in creating the Library’s strategic plan. Volunteers were essential in fundraising and getting the library built and in helping out during a disaster (January 2009!).

The library benefits from people who give their time. Sheri Girdner and Penny Kampf are our longest-serving volunteers who help with various tasks in the library. Our computer tutor, Cathy Kreisman, has taught more than a hundred area residents basic computer skills as our volunteer for close to two years. Nichole Adamson, our homebound services volunteer, delivers library materials to patrons who can’t get to the library. They are all wonderful to work with and we are so lucky to have their devotion.

Now, I’d like to ask for your volunteer help. As you may know, the Library is having its First Annual Really Big Book Sale on April 20 & 21 in the Flora Room. We have a storage area where donations and withdrawn library materials are kept. Timber Lake Job Corps volunteers will load up a truck and bring our items to the library. Volunteers are needed to unpack the boxes and organize things on tables for the sale. A meeting will be held this Saturday, March 16 at 1 p.m. where I will provide more details about how you can help. [Update: If you missed the meeting you can still sign-up for a shift. Ask at the circulation desk.]

On a related note: about this time last year the library started our book sale area, Chapter 2. I’d like to recognize Karen Hardman for volunteering to restock the book sale area and for occasionally selling books in the lobby on Saturday. We always sell more when she is there. Also, thank you to Mary Hyde, another volunteer who has helped maintain our book sale area.

Another need we have is for a Friends of the Library group. Our library is the only one in Clackamas County that does not have a friends group: that is, a group of volunteers that can help out with a variety of projects throughout the year such as our book sale and our dahlia sale (Note: The Estacada Area Literary Foundation provides funding for specific library needs). I’ve been told many of you are looking for volunteer opportunities. A friends group would be an excellent and varied way for you to give of your time and talent. One of our library board members, Jane Troeh, has offered to help get this off the ground. Are you interested? Call the library!

Looking forward,

Michele, Library Director
